School is not just somewhere children go so their parents can work, nor is it merely a place to play or make friends, although of course it serves all those purposes too. Its purpose is far more significant, not only for children and their families, but for society.
An educated population means people who are aware of their decisions and rights and who, consequently, will not be easily manipulated and will experience less inequality and poverty. In the future, all of this translates into higher incomes and, of course, a better quality of life.
However, even though all this is common knowledge, many parents think only in the short term and send their children to school without properly following up on the education they receive. Increasingly, we have a generation of parents who neglect their responsibility to educate their children, delegating that role to schools. Then, only when a report card arrives with complaints or poor grades do they raise an outcry.
It is sad, but many parents do not realize that teachers impart knowledge, while making the most of it is the responsibility of students and their parents. Especially in the early years, much of that responsibility lies with parents, since their guidance largely determines the kind of students their children will become.
HOW CAN YOU ENSURE YOUR CHILD IS A GOOD STUDENT?
FAMILY STABILITY
Issues such as family breakdown directly and negatively affect how much your children benefit from school. As parents, please take care of the family environment you give your children, because a troubled home leads to distracted children with little commitment to their studies.
HELP THEM THINK
One way is to get involved in their homework. But be careful not to do it for them, or become frustrated if they cannot do it correctly. What matters is not so much the result as the process. It is best for your children to understand how to solve problems.
ENCOURAGE THEIR LEARNING
It is important to instill a desire to learn, and one thing to remember is to offer them the space and materials they need to study. Let them know that a well-prepared person has better chances of a better life in every respect.
BE PRESENT AT SCHOOL
A teacher who sees an interested parent will pay more attention to that student, even without intending to. Not only that, but the teacher will feel confident turning to the parents whenever a situation calls for their support.
TEACH VALUES
A responsible, honest, persevering person who can think independently, about themselves and their community, has the sensitivity needed to take advantage of opportunities.
The family is where children learn. More than that, it is in fact the place where they will continue learning even as they move into other settings. Strive to be a parent who contributes and sets your children on the path of knowledge, but remember that your support and care will be the secret ingredient that helps them make the most of it.
