The world seems to be against us when we need to study, do homework, or finish an assignment. Learning to be more efficient during study hours helps us earn better grades and use time optimally, leaving more time for fun. We need both to organize our studying and to learn to eliminate distractions while studying.
If you are easily distracted when doing homework, working, or studying, use these 7 tips to avoid distractions when you want to study:
- Do not study when tired.
- Identify distractions and overcome them.
- Stay off the radar.
- Adapt your space.
- Take a study break now and then.
- Do not go hungry or thirsty.
- Persevere.
1) Do not study when tired:
Your mood directly influences performance and concentration when studying. If you are tired, busy, or stressed, you will not achieve much even if you spend many hours.
It is better to rest a little and try doing something that takes your mind off your worries before studying. You will notice that after some rest, your performance improves and you can focus all your energy on studying.
2) Identify distractions and overcome them:
Suppose you are trying to study in your living room and are constantly distracted by a curtain moving in the wind. In this particular case, you could close off the airflow making the curtain move. But if you cannot do anything to stop the distraction, you can force yourself not to look. Do this whenever the distraction appears, and eventually you will no longer notice it.
3) Stay off the radar:
You have found your study area, where distractions do not assail you… except those you bring yourself.
Text messages, social media, calls, and other electronic-device distractions are among the main barriers to staying focused while studying. Fortunately, the solution is easy and entirely within your control. Disconnect!
- Turn off device notifications.
- Do not answer calls or text messages.
- If you cannot avoid this distraction, look for applications or browser extensions that block social media, certain websites, or specific notifications that distract you while studying.
If your mind tends to wander, you can listen to soft music, preferably without lyrics, but do not allow yourself to pay attention to anything else that pulls you away from your books.
We recommend our Spotify playlist, carefully created with instrumental music so you can concentrate 100%.
4) Adapt your space:
A peaceful environment can be disrupted if you have to search everywhere for materials, books, notebooks, and other things you need to study.
An excellent trick for avoiding these distractions is to keep a box with all the materials you usually need to study, so you can bring everything at once before starting your tasks.
It is also important to prepare your study space by choosing a comfortable chair. Try to make it a cool environment; this will help you concentrate significantly better.

5) Take a study break now and then:
It may seem counterproductive, but stopping studying occasionally can actually be more beneficial than continuing without a break. About once an hour, get up and rest for around 5 minutes. This refreshes your mind so you can stay focused when you return to studying.
6) Do not go hungry or thirsty:
Forget getting up every 10 minutes to stare into the refrigerator again and again, take a few sips of water, or snack on something. Before studying, prepare snacks and drinks in your study area to keep hunger and thirst away.
People who tend to become distracted will find any excuse to stop studying, including needing a full stomach to think better, so do not let yourself find a reason to stop.
Here is an easy, healthy idea you can try:

Cucumber sandwich
Besides being easy to prepare, these are healthy. Instead of a traditional sandwich, make delicious cucumber sandwiches with ham and a slice of your favorite cheese.
7) Persevere:
The key to avoiding distractions is setting a routine to follow. The first few days, abandoning bad habits is complicated and you will certainly fall into some distractions, but perseverance and willpower will help you leave them behind and focus on your studies. Apply these tips to avoid distractions, and do not give up even if you struggle or fail in the first few days; perseverance will be your best ally.
If you follow these steps, you will notice how easy it is to avoid distraction, because at the end of your study session you will feel a sense of achievement and progress.
An extra tip:
If you have a very large assignment to finish or the content you want to study is extensive and complex, you can follow these steps:
- Divide it into smaller, more manageable tasks.
- Then take one of those subtasks and list the sequence of steps you need to follow to complete it successfully.
- Check off each step as you complete it.
This strategy gives you a sense of constant progress while training your ability to concentrate better and better.
